Happy Valentine's Day!


Today let's try this sentence from Mark Twain's 
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer:  


Then conscience gained a truce, 
and these curiously inconsistent pirates fell peacefully to sleep.



Rewrite this sentence three times using synonyms for: gained, inconsistent and pirates.

  1. That sentence is a mouthful! What is meant by "then conscience gained a truce"? They quit troubling themselves over it?

    1. I would say their conscience made peace with whatever was bothering it. They must have forgiven themselves or allowed understanding for their crime.

  2. How about acquired, fickle and thieves, or grew, unstable and Vikings, or added, washy-washy, and robbers of the high seas? (I really should have used a thesaurus after those first three!)
